About Dr Michael Delaney

When a person trusts me to perform a life changing operation for them, I consider it an honour and a privilege”.
- Dr Michael Delaney

Michael Delaney is a proud local, with a family history in the region dating back five generations.

Michael completed secondary school at North Bundaberg State High, initially studying Engineering at the University of Queensland. He changed to medicine, working during university holidays chipping cane and picking tomatoes. After graduating, Michael’s medical career began at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and involved many placements in tertiary centres, as well as rural and remote areas, including a term with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Michael’s passion was for orthopaedics and he trained in Queensland. In 1998 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (Orthopaedics) and the following year a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

In 1999, with his wife Angela and young sons, Michael returned home to establish his private practice. Additionally he worked as a visiting specialist at the Bundaberg Base Hospital, continuing to give back to the public system.

For many years he has focused his practice on helping people with non-operative and operative management of knee conditions.

Dr. Delaney has continued to develop his expertise by visiting and operating with 30 eminent knee replacement surgeons across Australia, the US, UK, and Europe.

“It has always been my goal to ensure that people in my care receive world’s best practice.” Michael Delaney

Dr Delaney has performed more than 3000 knee replacements and over 1000 arthroscopies for people.

Dr. Delaney’s unwavering commitment to education has earnt him the respect of his colleagues. He is actively involved in teaching junior doctors, medical, nursing and allied health students. He has been a recipient of the prestigious Mervyn Neely Award, presented to him for excellence in medical teaching. It is the only award chosen purely by the students and is presented annually to one teacher in the Medical Faculty of the University of Qld.

On weekends Michael loves to escape to a small property near Childers where he runs some cattle. The land has been in the family for four generations and he feels a strong connection to the place.

When a person trusts me to perform a life changing operation for them, I consider it an honour and a privilege”.
