    Conservative Management

For symptomatic knee osteoarthritis there are 11 non-operative treatments with scientific evidence of benefit. These treatments have been proven to reduce pain and improve function.

After thorough assessment, diagnosis and delineation of a person’s functional needs, Dr Delaney will discuss and, where appropriate, implement the modalities which are relevant for the person.

    Knee Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy has its place but is uncommonly utilised in patients with substantial osteoarthritis.

Occasionally someone with osteoarthritis of the knee and a loose body, or unstable meniscal tear causing mechanical symptoms will benefit from arthroscopy.

N.B. The vast majority of meniscal tears reported on MRI scans of people with arthritic knees are degenerative, stable and will not benefit from arthroscopy.

    Total Knee Replacement

Dr Delaney uses up to date, and most importantly, scientifically proven surgical techniques.

    1. Kinematic Alignment - aims to restore the original alignment of the limb and reproduces the natural tension in the soft tissue. This maximises comfort and stability.

    2. Patient Specific Instrumentation - A scan of the person’s limb is sent to Switzerland where 3D printed instruments, specific to the patient’s anatomy, are created. These instruments improve accuracy when positioning the knee replacement.

    3. A Medial Pivot Prosthesis - provides excellent knee stability and more natural movement. This type of knee replacement is particularly appropriate for a person who wishes to function at a higher physical level.

Using up to date methods with proven benefit, Dr Delaney has documented evidence of high levels of patient satisfaction, pain relief and function, and longevity of the implant.
